4WD shift handle Question

This is probably something easy and I just can't figure it out. How do I get the handle off the 4WD shift? Have a 96 XJ and the old plate that sits around the shift was broken--I picked up a new one and now can't figure out how to get it over the handle. Thanks!

i'd imagine you'd start by disconnecting the linkage under the vehicle. the rest should be pretty self explanatory.

While the jeep is off move the 4wd handle around along with the bezel and it wil go in. thats what i did with my xj.

Just curious - where did you get your new plate and how much did it cost? I'm thinking about replacing both plates - for tranny and t-case. Thanks. Rick

I picked it up at a local junk yard. They didn't charge me anything for it.
