I am installing 4.88 gears and the Superior Super 44 Kit with Detroit into a rear D44 out of an XJ that I picked up from a local wrecking yard. I just wanted get the opinion from some of your veteran gear installers on the pattern I am getting. This is my first R&P install.

In my opinion, it looks pretty close. If anything, it may need to be a little deeper, but I am not sure.

This is driveside.

This is coastside.

im not one, but the coast side makes the pinion look deep...

Im no expert by any means but ive looking at patterns for about 3 yrs now..
and It looks allright..runable .
its up to you if ya wanna try and get it better..
pends how much time you are into it now remember if you are using the set up bearings it might change a tad when ya go to the final assembly..
btw the persina blue is great for doing paterns
much better than the yellow

From what I have read, the primary concern is depth from face to flank and not necessarily heel to toe, if the backlash is good. Is this correct??

Pinion depth looks ok however the pattern is a little towards the face. You could try to move the ring gear a few thousands deeper as long as the backlash stays within specs.

What? The pinion depth is okay but he needs to move it towards the face? I think you have your terms mixed up.

I'm no expert either but I'd run that.

Looks pretty good to me...it usually aint possible to get the pattern centered toe to heel on drive and coast...took me over a dozen tries before i got mine that good :laugh3: And it's way quieter than the last one i paid big bux to have done.

That was the first pattern I ran once I got the backlash where I wanted it. I got the pinion depth set based on the engraved numbers on the ends of the old pinion vs. the new pinion. I am gonna get my 33 spline axles installed and run it. Thanks for all the help.
