1990 AX-15 tranny repair

I'm in the middle of pulling an AX-15 transmission on a 1990 XJ 4.0 litre to replace a bad release bearing, and I just noticed that it is best to remove transmission in 3rd gear. It's almost ready for removal, but I remember when I disassembled the shifter, the tranny was in neutral. Since the release bearing is gone, I don't even know if I can get it in gear. Is this something I should wory about?

Also found some information here on CPS removal. Any tips on this? It's the last thing holding me up before I try to slide the transmission out of there. Thanks.
