89 XJ Steering column cracking its knuckle!

Normal steering produces a pop from what sounds like the top of the steering column. If the column were a finger it would sound like cracking the old knuckle. You can hear it parked turning the column with yer hand but on the road it's LOUD pretty much anytime you turn the wheel.

Probly have to take to the dealer to fix but wondered if it's something I can fix in the carport. Have '88 FSM pdf manual but need a lead. Any comments appreciated.

89 XJ 4.0 5sp 160K bought a few mo's ago for 1200$.

could be the steering shaft, there are little u-joint in there, 2 I believe, check them for play just like you would check the u-joints in your driveshaft. if there is a ton of play, you need a new shaft.
