I've been following the thread about swapping the hi output alt from a 90's dakota (etc) into the 91 and later xj. Are there any options for the earlier models ( 90 and older). I have a 90 Loredo 4.0 auto and am in need of a higher output alt. and was wondering what else might fit.

A few years back when my Alt decided to die, I bought a 200amp Mean Green Alt. It works great; but, something tells me there is a cheaper swap option out there (one that is less than the 3-400 dollars that a Mean Green costs now-a-days).

I simply needed something that would work no matter what, and would have a warranty 'cause my XJ was my daily driver back then. I have 6 vehicles, but the XJ is the only one which consisently ran...I wanted to keep it that way...hell, the XJ is still the only one which always runs! No matter what!

I looked at the mean green, nice unit but, I dont habe the 400 bucks they want for it. I am actually looking for a replacemant I could maybe pick up at the wrecking yard.

There was a long thread on Pirate a while back about the Durango and ZJ alternators being swapped into tj's...

Try a search over there...

I had a local alternator shop make me a 130 amp model for $120...

I didn't have the time to go tracking thru the pick and pull for an alternator...

IIRC... There was someone in a different PBB thread that used the high output alternator from a police edition Chevy (caprice, impala?)

I found the $30 alternator PBB thread but it only works for 91 and up...

I got my 160A from a local shop who gets all my rewind business (and I'll proabably keep going with him via mail order when I move to AZ in a couple years) for a positively scandalous price. I've talked to him before, and he's willing to do mail order if there's enough interest. You might not get the pricing that I get, but I've been sending him business for years.

If enough people can show me direct interest (via PM or email to [email protected],) I'll take it all in to him and press him for some numbers. Shipping would be from San Jose, CA - or local pickup.
