AC Compresser fried??

there is a black wire that comes off the compressor that goes to a wire that comes out of the firewall and it has melted to the point that it has cut itself. so i tryed reconecting it and when i turn the fan switch to any of the settings for ac or heat it blows the fuse for the fan so what do you guys out there think it is???? 90 XJ auto 4.0 4 door
