I have a problem with my 1990 xj high reving after I start it and sometimes gets higher. I have cleaned out the idle stepper motor before on a dying condition so I know its not related. The xj has 178k on it and burns no oil and has a new pcv system on it also.

Anyone have any ideas?

Check TPS, adjust TPS.
Clean Throttle Body
Retorque intake manifold bolts.

Check for resistance in the TPS ground path.

i had the same issue for years and when i finally replaced the TPS it was cured

i had the same thing with my 89.
replaced the TPS,IAC motor,Adjusted tps,torqued intake manifold,gave the TPS another ground.
I finally "fixed" mine by getting it to idle where i wanted to and the i unplugged the MOFO, and i havent had a problem since.
