Steering has a catch

My '91 seems to have a "catch" 3-4 times per steering wheel revolution. Anyone else ever experience this? I don't think that it's in the column, as I am getting some groans from the front end when turning.

Got a tilt column? My 89 (same column) had a similar clicking that turned out to be a bushing in the tilt column. When it wears out, the column will actually start to flop around left-right and up-down as you push on it while turning.

have you checked your power steering fluid-level? Had that problem on another vehicle once, & it turned out to be a very small PS fluid leak, fixed easily with some sort of 'PS fluid with stop leak' (Valvoline was the maker, I think).
