Rear End Noise

I have a 96 XJ. I have a rear end noise that sounds like a gear being rolled across a hard surface. I have read other threads about noises during acceleration, braking, turning, etc.. but mine makes this noise when I let off the gas (like slowing down for a stop prior to putting on brakes) more than any other time. No change when turning left or right or accelerating so it kinda has me thinking its not the bearings but I am by no means an expert. Any ideas out there?

I have this problem too. Slight noise at 15mph + but the loudest noise under deaceleration. What should i check first. Fluid is clean and no metal.

Having the same problem with my 99 xj. It started doing it after i put a 3" lift and 31" tires on.
