I have a 88 xj 4.o automatic 130 k. the problem I am having is it seems like the trany is trying to jumpdown a gear. it doesent do it all the time though. any sugestions fluid level is good and clean could this be a tps problem? thanks

TPS - yes -- check for smooth output as the thorttle plate is opened/closed...

Fluid level & condition - always a good thing --

look also at the TVS cable (the 'kickdown' cable -- adjust it to spec, but try using the "gas pedal" to operate teh linkage and not the more standard "thumb-to-belcrank" method... That'll account for slop in more of the system...

Also the TCU is notorious for poor connections -- with the battery disconnected - disconnect and reconnect the TCU and other tranny related connectors (TPS, NSS, and tranny harness at a minimum)
