So I come home from work the other day and my Dad says "do you wanna see my new toy?" Sure so I look at his 97' xj and see that he got bushwacker cut outs and he had them installed at a place that I think don't do good work. well I was sort of mad because they used a sawzall to cut out the fenders... now they are way past the pinch seam and look like s*#t to me. is there anything I can do for them? here is an example of what they look like, it's the pass side door piece.

Holy crap that is terrible. Tell your dad to take it back and tell them to weld those seems back together to get the job done right. I just got done doing that job this week, and it took forever. If you took off the paneling from the inside, you could stick your hand through that hole, no kidding.

By cutting that seam away, they significantly weakened the strength of the unibody. Cutting for those flares is not simple job to do right. At this point, it needs to go to a good body shop to be fixed.

Wow, who ever did that should not be in buisness. The unibody gets a lot of support from that area so its needs to be welded back up. Also tons of crap will get inside the panel back there and the jeep will smell like mold after a while.

Welding it will fix the strength issue.

Also so all the carpet is going to be wet until you close it up. Thats horrible they would let you leave their lot with it like that.

guys with rolling papers do better than that after their finished :greensmok

I'd really go after that hack. To fix that properly it looks like it needs a dogleg or a whole quarter done to it IMHO...and it still wont be as nice as it was before they started.

If it's welded and painted, it'll be FINE.

Maybe so but if they are a licensed shop you cant let them walk away with just hacking back together again. I'd tell them make it the way it was before you started F'ing with it. Period.

Or start the war.

I'm sure their welding and painting skills are top notch. (sarcasm)

Woah, nobody was critisizing your welding??? But I guess you've never welded 22ga steel either.

What would you do if it was your rig? " gee bud thanks for F'ing it up. Can you weld it back together now ??" I think not. Sheite would hit the fan.

Someone did that to me...I'd be a little more peaved than,"just weld it up dude... I gotta get home... its 4:20..Gotta warm up the Bong..."

Jeeezus.. maybe if "the owl" does your welding your satisfied. Most of the rest of us wouldn't be.

If you will read, you'll understand no one is talking about your welding , I'm talking about the shop that cut this guy Jeep! I think they're the ones responsible and should take care of it.

A weld is a weld, but I didn't say that it had to be done quickly. My welding took 2 days to get it all perfect.

it does look like hell. but it is also missing the trim piece that hides all the butchery. have em' welded shut. takes about an hour to do both sides then call BW and get the trim for the door opening. cleans the whole install up.

i took off that part to take the pictures... I also found out that he paid like 300 bucks to get it done... I was going to do it for him the next day... I didn't have to work and we were going to take all day and do it right.. I rand a search on the forum and found about 4 different write ups... I knew it would be difficult but man he has no patience... Let this be a lesson to you all.... DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, even if it takes longer!

Thanks for all your input... Afriend of the family is a body man... he's going to fix it all up for him...

Not only did they hack the heck out of it, it doesn't look like they even tried to cover up the bare steel left from cutting with a little paint or primer. I guess that's not really a suprise considering the quality of that job. :puke:

I highly recommend that you fully document the entire process as soon as possible. If it ever ends up in small claims court, you will need as much evidence as possible, including dates, times, photographs, names of the places, people and times you called or saw them and what events transpired. It might even be a good idea to have a friend come with you and videotape the entire interaction of asking the shop to fix it again. That way you have the event and their explanations on tape. I would ask them to repair it first and then have it professionally inspected. If they won't, get it done somewhere else, but get several quotes first so that you can show what the average estimates for the work done were, that way you can sue him for the accurate amount and there is less to argue with. Having been through a similar process and getting screwed out of my money for lack of evidence, I learned the above stuff. Document it now, as it won't be as clear in a month.

If some shop chopped my rig up like that, I'd be going ballistic! :soapbox:
The install's not that tough, it just takes some time to do.
Good luck with the outcome!

I am well over due for a fender trim job. Any suggestions or tips on doing it right. Not sure if I want to spend the cash on Bushwacker's. Any help is appreciated.

i dont know how old you are but if you are 18-20 something it can be fun to turn the table on your old man and tell him to wise up and stop being such a lazy schmuck, throw a bunch of tired old cliches at him like you get what you pay for, good help is hard to find, good things come to those who wait, and you give him an earfull like you are the dad talking to the little kid. :lecture:

sorry to hear he got burned.

Was this an actual store front shop with a business license and actual history of good work ?

Amazing. I do all my own work with the exception of tranny rebuilds, engine rebuild. Amazing as a self taught guy who never so much as took auto tech in highschool that a "professional" could do that ?????:wow:

Shops that do crap work work like that are running by the "Barnum Principle".

There's a sucker born every minute

edit: I got screwed the same way...had mine installed as part of a complete bodywork/paint job project....had no idea till I took a flare off for maintenance one day....
