As the title states. This is on an 89 with 4.0. It was running great until I pulled it in my shop to replace an axle seal. While I was at it I installed a cone filter (homemade tube, attached 2 1/2" hoses, blocked off vac line) and changed the gasket for my fuel pump. Now it starts right up but begins to sputter and die within 10-15 seconds or immediately if I give it throttle. I checked all the vacuum lines.

how about fuel pump relay or resistor. Sounds like resistor wire is unplugged

I'm with checking the ballast resistor as well (especially in an '89 - if it's early production the ballast may be close-enough to your home-made cone to have been involved with some kenetic event)
