I already have the shaft removed on my 88 xj and I need to know how to get the axle seal out. I am talking about the one that remains in the axle tube after the shaft is removed. Thanks

Assuming you have a c-clip Dana 35, then the axle seals are just pressed into the outer ends of the axle tubes. You can use a seal remover to pry them out, or I just used a claw hammer (very carefully- don't let the claws touch the seal seat, or you may gouge it and get a leak). The new seals can be lightly greased then just tapped into the tubes using a block of wood on the seal, gently tapping the wood with a hammer, to ease it in square. There are alot of seal brands out there- I like the one I got from the dealer better than the aftermarket one which I put on the other side. 4xBob

Sorry, I see you have a 1988 XJ - that's a non-c-clip axle. The seal system works differently- my procedure won't work for you. 4xBob
