i have a 1990 XJ and when you first start it up the oil pressure is about 40 and then as it gets hot it goes down between 0-20?? any ideas?

How many miles are on the engine? What brand, type, and weight of oil do you use? And what brand of oil filter do you use?
Also oil pressure varies depending on engine speed (at least, it should). What's you pressure at idle, cold and hot, and what's the pressure at 55 MPH (cold and hot)?

using regular mobil 5w-30.
oil pressure cold:
Idle: 40
55+: 40-50
oil pressure hot:
idle: 0-20
55+: 20
oil pressure cold:
Idle: 40
55+: 40-50

On my old 87, the oil pressure dropped significantly about the same time as the, rear main seal started leaking. Always figured the mains were getting loose.
I did check the electrical gauge against a mechanical gauge, plugged into the spot where the sending unit screws in. The electric gauge/sending unit, was 7 + PSI low.
A new main bearing seal help a little, 10-50 synthetic oil helped some more. It finally stabilized at acceptable to a little low. Never seemed to hurt much, no lifter noise, knocks or other strange noises.
