Replacing Ends on Emergency Brake Cables

I need to make some custom length emergency brake cables (from rear wheels the adjustment box). Can someone tell me how to attach the metal balls that go on the end of the cables - the ones that allow them to be grabbed by the parts for adjusting/connecting to the front cable...

I am almost done installing a Ford 8.8 rear axle. The e-brake cables will work except one of them has a couple of inches more exposed out the end of the sheath than the other (I have no idea why). So I was going to shorten that one cable but I don't know the proper way to attach the little metal end on the cable.

Thanks,
-Brian
