87 to a 89

My Tranny called it quits last weekend, its an 89 aw4, I have a 87 aw4 with a 231, my question is , will the 87 swap into the 89 ok. and can I swap in the 231 on my 89 without changing the front axle(the 89 oe is a 242 t-case)
no vaccum disco.

what's the tranny doing? (I highly doubt it's the tranny itself)

It won't shift out of 3 gear, even in reverse or nuetral. any I D's?

Yes, the transmissions will substitute just fine. You can use the 242 on the vacuum disco axle if you shim the disco closed but you'll probably have to plug some vacuum lines that won't be used on the 242 to avoid vacuum loss.
