All other factors being unchanged (no lift at the same time or anything like that), the stock 8.25 drive shaft is 5/8" shorter than the stock Dana 35 drive shaft, for an XJ with automatic and 231 transfer case.
Mine's lifted around 4"-4.5" and I just swapped in a D-35 driveshaft. The little bit of extra legth was a welcome sight as my factory driveshaft was dangerously short at that height. It looked like the slipyoke could've just popped right out with enough droop. The D-35 driveshaft put it closer to where it was at stock height.
