A/C works at first... then goes away

99 Limited 4.0
Start Jeep up, turn on A/C. Jeep gets cold, drive out to the end of my road and come to a stop. A/C stops blowing cold. Sometimes makes it to the stoplight a mile away before this happens. Usually never blows cold again that day. Sometimes works the next day.
Caveat- I have not delved into this much. If I had my own A/C machine I would recover it and recharge myself. I really don't want to pay a shop to do it, since they will probably want to actually fix the problem for me. Just looking for suggestions right now.

Figure out if the compressor is staying on or shutting off.. Check freon pressure, charge it.. You've got options.

Sounds like a bad clutch to me, cheap and easy fix without opening the system.
