94 XJ Smoke out of the Stalk ? ?

My Windshield wipers have been flaky over the last few months, i tried replacing the intermittent module under the dash and that hasn't helped. A few days ago a small puff of smoke came out from the turn stalk, i am assuming this is related. The turn signals still work amazingly...

What needs to be replaced, the stalk itself or is there some switch inside ? This is a 94 Cherokee with no cruise.

Remove the steering column trim and look for anything that appears to has lost its magical smoke (burned/discolored wires, fused/melted insulation, exposed copper, etc).
