Burning Smell after Steering Wheel install?

'95, maybe '96 4.0, 5 Speed, Bone Stock, I took out the airbag steering wheel and the plastic box behind it(clockspring maybe? it made it where the turn signals don't turn off automatically), leaving the electrical connection empty. I installed a Grant wheel with one of their adapters, went down the highway about 10 miles, and smelt a pretty strong burning smell coming from under the hood. I got home and it's definitely coming from the hood, but I couldn't get it to smoke, and me and a buddy couldn't find the source. Anyone have any ideas? Is removing the plastic box behind the wheel on airbag-equipped XJ's ok? Thanks for the help, it's getting lifted this weekend and I don't have the $$$ for a breakdown.
