I dont mind doing work I really dont. Did the head and valves myself, did the lift my self. But I dislike doing work where I cant see a finished product, and seals are a job I just dont wanna do.

Im tired of an obnoxious oil leak that keeps getting worse. So I dropped my car off at a shop that does pretty much nothing but jeeps.

Rear main seal, crank seal, oil pan and oil filter adapter for $600 was what I was quoted.

Fair?

would you do 4 hours work for $500 ? If so do it yourself and pocket that much.

If you are lifted its a really straight forward thing to do. The most "technical thing" to do is re torquing the rear main cap.

Sometimes the oil filter adapter torx bolts can be a bear. Buy ya a allen wrench style torx on ebay..... got mine for $9 on there... use a larger wrench for a cheater on it if needed.
Once ya get it broken loose its a 5 minute job to do.

Also make sure it isnt your valve cover gasket leaking at the rear and running down.

Yes seriously. not hard to do any of the above. rear main isnt hard to do especially since you're lifted. Legitimately, you could do the OFA o rings easily (dealer set of 3). My 91 has a regular hex bolt. Got the housing off in 5 mins.

In all honesty, those gaskets are a weekend job. Valve cover, OFA, RMS, the works. Save the $600 and put towards the addiction rather than simple things you can do yourself. You've taken the head off and you're worried about doing the seals?

You have to drop the whole tranny dont you? Sounds like a PITA. Oil pan and adapter I could do in my sleep. I just dont know if I feel like dropping the tranny. I might study on it though before I give the go ahead.

On jobs where someone says it only take 4 hours for a first timer ive found it takes 8.

How long would it take honestly???

I did the downpipes on my Audi 2.7 twin turbo.

Everyone on the forums said 4 hours easy.

9 hours later I was done.

Here are some links for RMS replacement for your reference,

I did mine about 2 weeks back and that was the first time using a wrench :yelclap:

You will need torque wrench (1 for in.lbs and another for ft.lbs) as well as a breaker bar which all can be loaned from Autozone.

Do it yourself, learn a bit and use the money you saved to get some tools.
As long as you don't rush, is fairly easy.......oily tho :D
