hi all.

just picked up an 89 laredo 4.0 in beautiful shape for a grand. no rust Az jeep for the past ten-fifteen yrs.

my question is, pulling the lever back to 4hi is no problem, partime light comes on..front end engages.

pulling back to N or 4low is a no go...lever just stops dead before it gets to neutral.

PO used 4hi a couple times in the snow, but can't remember ever trying 4low. he owned it for the past ten years so it probably hasn't been in that gear for that long. where should i start trouble shooting?

would 4hi be able to work but not neutral and 4low? or try the linkages?

thanks guys

Ok, are you moving the lever slightly to the right to get the lever past the shift gate?

Underneath the XJ you will find a shift lever tab attached to the transfer case. From that a rod runs up to the torque bar tab. The torque bar is attached to the transfer case and the body and has two tabs on it. One tab has the lower rod attached, the other tab has the upper rod. From the torque bar the upper rod runs to the transfer case lever. On the upper rod is the trunnion--square looking thing, a bolt sticking out of it--that is the adjustment locking bolt. Loosening it allows you to slide it along the rod and adjust the linkage.
