is a noisey, wobbley 4wd shifter common on xjs (97-01)?
mine seems to annoyingly make noise mostly at idle or constant speeds.
i usually have to press it down or lift up just a bit to stop it.

is there anyway to tighten it or some trick to silencing it?

my girls '00 seems to do it a bit too.

A rattle from the shifter handle can be cured by replacing the plastic bushings in the linkage... there was a FSB on some years but when I took my wife's '01 in with the problem (still under warranty, mind you) they said it didn't pertain to her model year. Bullshizzle dealership sheisters.

Those bushings are about fifty cents.

how easy is the labor?
just working inside removing the console or do you have to go from under?

Underneath. Take a peek at it. Not complicated just a little tough to get tools in there. May need to pull the front driveshaft at the t-case for a little "wiggle room"
