4 wheel working?

The other day, rush hour was horrible. Coming down a steep hill, with leaking wheel cylinders (it's on the list) and riding the brakes didn't seem like a good idea. So I put it in 4 low and rode the hill. Not something I like doing, but it worked. Almost home, the rear u-joint decided to go. So I took the rear d/shaft out, and tried 4 high to get home. Nothing!! What's the deal. How come I couldn't drive home in "front wheel drive"?

May have bound up the transfer case to the point something bent. Is your linkage adjusted correctly? Year/trans/transfercase?

If you have the full time 4WD, this would be normal.

Vacuum disconnect D30 CAD axle in the front, probably a vacuum problem so the front axle wouldn't engage--common.
