View Full Version : SoCalFest T-Shirt Design Contest

djblade311
February 25th, 2010, 14:39
Hello all,

We will be holding a T-Shirt design contest for the SoCalFest event t-shirts!

Design Guidelines

Design can represent XJ/MJ wheeling in Big Bear or mountainous regions with pines.
Your design should include the words SoCalFest 2010, SoCal Chapter, or NAXJA SoCal Chapter. Event date can also be included but not necessary/
The shirt should be something that someone would want to wear even if they didn’t attend the event. Make it cool…
Ideally, the design should have a graphic for the back of the t-shirt and smaller text or small graphic for the front pocket area (though the shirt will not have any pockets).
You can submit as many designs as you want.
Your design must be wholly original. By submitting a design you are guaranteeing that you hold rights to everything in it, and that it does not contain any copyright material. We don’t want to be sued by the original artist.

Design Specifications

Designs should be in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic). Accepted formats are EPS, Illustrator, Inkscape (Open Source) or another professional design program. If you use another means to make your design, you must be prepared to provide print-ready files of the design should you win.
Your design should contain a maximum of four (4) colors (plus the shirt color). We are planning for 3 color.
Assume the t-shirt colors will be neutral or earthy tones like Beige, Green, but they may also be in blue, black, maroon, etc.
Your submission should be a PDF file no larger than 5MB. If you win we will ask you for the high resolution files.

Submission Agreement

Any submitted designs become the property of NAXJA.
The Chapter will have all rights to the winning design. By submitting you agree that if your design wins, it can be used by NAXJA for the T-Shirt and other promotional items.
All submitted designs may also be used for future events.
The winner will receive a prize of 2 free t-shirts of any size and one dinner.
We reserve the right to make adjustments to the winning design.
You must submit your design by midnight on March 15th, 2010 by emailing your PDF to djblade311 at yahoo dot com.
First round judging will be conducted by Chapter BOD to narrow down entries. The top entries will be judged by use of a membership poll available to all SoCal Chapter members.
By submitting you are agreeing to all contest rules.

Let me know if anyone has any questions and good luck to all!

It's adorable, it's funny, and would be great to use if we had enough interest to offer a separate design for kids' shirts =). Maybe we can get some shirts made with that design for the SoCal Chapter store...

But let's get the SoCalFest shirts designed & made first!!

I don't know, like the "M" on Monster drink cans, or ?????

this is a really nice design...just my opinion. very vivid, easy to read...looks like a camp shirt.

I really do hate the shirts that are so photo-realistic. Like those hot rod shirts with the spinning tires/etc.

Carol.92124
March 29th, 2010, 21:42
No, the problem (from what I hear, at least) is that when you use a photograph, it's (a) very difficult, and (b) very expensive, to get it to turn out well on a t-shirt cost-effectively & durably. Too many colors & variables, or some such gobbledegook.

SanDiegoOverland
March 29th, 2010, 23:38
Alright, here's another idea'r...

I've left a bit of open space on the left there, so you can see that the color of the tree's and mtn's are the color of the shirt...the white would be the color of the screen-printy-ness...

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb64/kodiak1232003/Picture2-1.jpg
I imagine this to be the back panel, with a low-key black border
with a small,

"naxja,
socalfest,
2010"

...on the front pocket.

Btw, the photo should look familiar, but I actually just drew
it out, simplifying and interpreting as I went, so its actually a bit different...

You need to design with the thought in mind screen printing is backwards. A good design on paper can sometimes not look even close once printed.

elegant or not, photo reproduction printing like that is A.) not cheap on a small run of shirts, and B.) going to crack apart and look hideous after awhile.

i stand corrected. on that one, 2 things you need to avoid are very fine lines and large areas of solid color. applying a halftone screen to make a gradation of that large white area would help some.

Josh, when is the cutoff for this? PM me i have a bit of time tomorrow.

Excellent...thanks for the input!

I'm not going to submit something else, but for others who might, in the next day or two, its good for them to know what will work and what won't.

Love to get some feedback from those running this, if they've already got a design or not. Whatever it ends up being will likely be cool, in any case.

I wear the hell out of my socalfest 08 shirt. my favorite part about it is it incorporates our chapter logo as part of the design. I am not sure who originally drew up the logo, but I really like the cartoony big tired XJ with one wheel up on a rock :dunno: maybe switch it up a bit and have it crawlin up the logo, some snowcapped trees and a mountain or two in the background. just throwing out ideas.

I just started back from spring break, and I'm going to have one HELL of a round of classes this time. I do however have a couple hours today. I'll try to draw something up.... it may be too late to get the shirts printed in time though.

Customink.com will print your designs quick and ship em to you, last time i had some done it took a week from order to my door. don't know how long the printer we are using takes. :dunno:
