my motor is loud too.
the 4.0 inline is just a loud motor
and try researching engine noise or ticking.
i know i cannot believe i am telling someone else to do research, but i learned the hard way, ill be a little nicer to you about telling you to just search the forums. It might take a while but you will find the answer you are looking for :D

Were you on the throttle when it died?
What was it doing when you tried to restart?

Year/engine?
 
Could be anything... if it comes from the bottom of the engine, it's probably not a valve or cylinder head problem.
Check the wheels of your water pump, power steering, a/c, ... I once had a clicking noise caused by a loose water pump wheel.
Did you notice anything unusual apart from the engine noise (performance, misfirings)?
