231 t-case swap

i recently just purchased a 97 sport and looked today and it has a 242 t-case. i am wanting to swap it out with a 231. will it just bolt in in place of my 242 with no problems and wat year xj's could i pull a used one from to use?

it is a 23 spline, so any case after the switch to 23 should be good.

you will also want to swap the z-gate and shifter indicator from the donor too.

For a simple bolt on swap, 1997-2001. Get the shifter bezel and shift gate. By changing some internal parts, other years can be adapted to fit.

I have a '96 XJ that had a '97+ TC in it. '96 was a transitional year for XJs. I swapped in a '94 TC and had absolutely no issues. It was a bolt in swap. If you are switching from a NP 242 to a NP 231 TC you will need the Shift Gate and so forth from the Donor Vehicle IMHO.

Why swap? For a little extra strength, while losing full time 4WD? Even Subarus have fulltime 4WD!!
