Ah Que Dicha - Death Valley/Panamint Valley 2015

Looks like a great time, sorry I couldn't make it.
Hopefully we'll make it out on the trail together sometime this year.

Panamint Springs resort is a rustic rv campground in Panamint valley for anyone not wanting to camp in DV. It's a fairly short drive into the valley each day and a great place to hang back in the evening.

Panamint Springs has rooms for rent as well but they are expensive. The 7 mile 9% grade up Towne Pass between Panamint Valley and Death Valley would be a deal breaker for me though. The truck handled it fine with the trailer, but I know the Jeep would have struggled.

I chose to stay in Beatty NV, about a 40 minute drive to DV. The town sucked, no grocery store, only 1 real restraunt (Denny's). But the hotel was cheap and relatively clean. I stayed at the Stagecoach Hotel and Casino. It was worth it to have a warm bed and shower waiting for me at the end of the day.

Me and a couple buddies went last October and it was awesome!! We did the lippencott mine pass and stayed up there a night and then went back down the pass and took saline valley Rd past the hot springs and stayed up in the mountains the second night and then mt. Whitney the last night in the way home. I can imagine it would take many more trips to cover the trails and see everything dv has to offer. we want to go back again sometime but might do the Mojave trail instead.
Thanks for sharing the pics!

Stovepipe Wells in DV has rooms as well. Bar, pool, dining, and gas station. Gas there is about 20-30 cents cheaper than furnace creek resort. There also the hot springs at Tacopa. I don't believe there are rooms there but I remember there being rv hookups. And Shoshone just up the road has a small grocery store.

Bryan,

I have my first trip to DV planned for middle of next month which is our spring break. I didn't realize how popular this place is in the spring (but it makes sense) based on how hard it is to make room reservations. Would camp but wife really doesn't like it... so I got lucky and got two nights at Stovepipe Wells (it is expensive). I'm hoping to get another night maybe at the Panamint Springs Resort or perhaps Beatty.

Plans are to hit Racetrack Playa, via the loop in Charles Wells guidebook. Also will do Mosaic Canyon, Titus Canyon, and plan to head down to Furnace Creek.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Tons of trails in the Panamint/DV area. During Cal4Wheel's Panamint Valley Days last November, I ran Pleasant Canyon and loved every second of it. Its not a tough trail, but the scenery is incredible. There is lots of open camping in the Panamint Valley desert, so we will head back there every chance we can.

I'll consider putting Pleasant Canyon on our itinerary. Its also in the Wells Guidebook so its easy to find.

I heard it is going to be a super bloom this year for wild flowers. Should be amazing in color.

We camped next to the authors of the Wells guidebooks last March at Moab. Good guys. I think they might have one of the best jobs on the planet. Despite my begging, they did not hire me, but at least he signed my Moab book.

I really enjoyed my trip down there. One thing I didn't realize is how spread out Death Valley is. Plan your trip accordingly, I spent more time driving to places than I wanted to. Seems like you are hitting some great spots, you will enjoy it.

Beatty isn't that great of a town. I was told to keep my expectations low and I was still surprised at how crappy it was. But, it was a semi close location, a warm bed, a hot shower, and reasonably cheap fuel for the trip.

This time of year can be windy so I wouldn't bother with camping. Stovepipe Wells is pretty central so that is a good spot to stay.

Flowers in the desert? That's crazy talk!
