    1988 fuel pump

Orson, I'm glad there was some help here. Yes, mine is in there and working fine. Hindsight being what it is, I sure wish I had posted a picture of the modified bracketry. But, it is pretty obvious what has to be done when you're faced with having to install the "new and improved version"...

    1988 fuel pump

Wow. The help here has been a little, shall we say, skinny. But, out of respect to those that did try to help, I'll close this out. This morning, I have installed the same make and part number fuel pump as the one that I installed and wouldn't pump about a week ago. NAPA P74155. My cost...

    1988 fuel pump

Let me ask one more question. Okay, among my choices of "wrong" fuel pumps, I seem to have a choice of pumps that put-out 65 psi and either 18 or 24 gallons per hour. What would be the performance difference? More fuel available when needed for power when pulling a load, up hill, etc...

    1988 fuel pump

Yes, I can (and have) made this "wrong" pump fit - - that wasn't a big problem with my Dremmel Tool. The problem was, and what I want to try to avoid happening again, the thing did not pump gas . . nothing, nada, no run, nothing at the fuel rail. And, NAPA did take that one back, labeling...

    1988 fuel pump

Okay, I went over to AutoZone today and looked at that pump. It is just the same as the others that I am referring to as the "wrong" pump. It just really seems someone on the forum must have run-up against this. I'm nearing the point where I may just buy another of these "wrong" fuel...

    1988 fuel pump

Thanks. Somehow, I wasn't able to determine that. I will take the number and go take a look. Don

    1988 fuel pump

Thanks but, as best I can tell from the picture, that's the style of the "wrong" pump. And, it says it's for the 2WD. Plus, when I attempt to search for the 4X4 pump their site tells me they don't have one. Don

    1988 fuel pump

Oh, yes, checked it and replaced it, just for fun. Oh, here's another piece I forgot to mention: My original fuel pump still works - - it's just noisy - - I have put it back in and (except for the noise) it works fine. Don

    1988 fuel pump

I need some help with locating the correct fuel pump for my 1988 40.L XJ Limited. I replaced the fuel pump a couple of times on my original 1988 40.L XJ Limited and never had a problem getting the correct pump. This is the first time I've needed to replace the pump on this 1988 40.L XJ Limited...

    Noisy fuel pump -temporary solution

So, we're not recommending adding a little oil to the fuel or anything like that, right? And, the tank is full - - - 'doesn't muffle it much. I'll be running it down to about the last 5 gallons this week because the tank is coming out. I did the change (on my first 88 XJ Limited) with the...

    Noisy fuel pump -temporary solution

Good morning. This isn't about what causes it, how to replace it or the old remove-the-tank-or-not question. Nor, is it about what to expect should it fail. I know all of that. The only question I have is this: it's SO noisy; is there anything you folks know about that I can add to my tank...

1988 XJ, Limited, 4.0L electric fan question

I'm not certain whether that diagram is showing-up for you or not. When I look, sometimes it's there and then sometimes it's the dreaded box with the red X. Anyway, "no" the electric fan does not run when jumping the plug that attaches to the radiator sensor/switch. I have identified the...

1988 XJ, Limited, 4.0L electric fan question

Hi, all! I've been off of here for awhile but I still have my '88 and the wife's 91 XJ's. I have actually spent quite a bit of time searching on here, in the archives, for the answer to my specific problem, without success. I do not currently have a cooling system problem - - well, at least...

    Failing fuel pump?

I experienced the whining fuel pump in my original '88XJ Limited twice in its 354,000 miles and I presently have it on a sometimes basis in my present '88XJ Limited with 220,000 miles. On the original XJ, it got pretty loud and persistent before I replaced it. I was told (probably here on the...

Leaky oil filler cap on 4.0L

Now that I have a moment, I wanted to more properly thank RenixPower for going over-and-beyond in his reply to my huge, major ( :roflmao: ) problem here. I haven't been on here for awhile (the XJ's have been pretty-much behaving themselves). But, I'm surely reminded of just how GREAT you guys...

Leaky oil filler cap on 4.0L

At the rate of (I assume) heat deterioration of the rubber gasket material, I really should replace the oil filler cap about four times a year. I get-around-to-it about twice a year :bawl: . ‘Replace it and a few months later, there’s this recurrent light coat of oil on the top of the valve...

    Rear main seal

Well, this wasn't as simple as I had expected. When the new seal came out, it was flattened-out - - - not bad installation nor a bad seal - - - a former just keep-it-running repair job. Someone, before I owned it, was in there and apparently discovered some crankshaft wear. Instead of doing...
