My '99 Cherokee would do this. It was so bad I had an app on my phone to get my speed via GPS. Three years back I had the heater core and blend doors replaced and after reassembling the dash the problem disappeared. I'm thinking, in my case, just oxidation or corrosion on the contacts.
Replaced the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. Amazingly easy, but only working intermittently. Dealership swears their diagnostics pointed to faulty buttons, but I'm starting to doubt that.
I keep a 2 1/2 lb under the rear seat, along with duct tape, spare radiator hoses and the OEM jack. Don't think there's room for a 5 pounder there though.
