One way is to have a helper to hold back the engine with a socket & breaker bar by the harmonic balancer bolt.

I have done it on 89 & 90 XJ's without lowering the tank. As I understand it needs to be lowered in newer models, but not sure which year the design was changed? In either case, be careful with the gasoline fumes in the tank. 🚑
