I looked all over and didn't find anything on rebuilding the idle speed control motor for 1986 and earlier XJ 2.5 engines. Just a tiny worn bushing. Hopefully I'll get the machining done right since everything is so small. $40 for a new one on Ebay. Fingers crossed.

Used my old smog machine of 30 years, to check for head gasket leaks into the cooling system. This machine is super sensitive to exhaust emissions. Although I had to do a lot of repair work to the machine first. Now it runs great.

This new to me 1988 stock 4.0 xj, has an interesting history.
Owner #1 had the unfortunate experience of having the vehicle stolen. The door key and ignition lock are new and match.
Owner #2 had almost zero technical skills.
