Check the ballast resistor on the driver side fender. It's the first place I look when I have problems with my 89.

Also, some, if not all, of the D35's up until 90 or 91 have a roller bearing pressed on the the shaft out by the backing plate. It's a real pain to change in the trail unless it's been apart before. So check and see if you have this axle with the bearings cause the newer shafts won't work.

Sounds like you're driving my Jeep, LOL. Mine was doing the same thing. The power wire to the ballast resistor was grounding out. The wire runs from a block in the corner of the firewall on the drivers side, it was grounding out there. Check that. Chris

The only thing I like about the Grand is the V8 option, other than that it's a Cherokee with rear coils.

I believe D44's were more commonly found in the 87 to 89 XJ's with the Wagoneer package. But can also be found in some Cherokee's as well.

That exact same thing happened to mine, except the yellow case was melted a bit as well. I put another box back in but it didn't work, so there's other problems elsewhere. Did the cruise work before? What should I check? Vacuum? Switch on the steering column?

A brand new ballast resistor is only $7 CAD, that's like $4-$5 US, from the dealer. I wouldn't join the wires together just for that simple reason. I'd say that's what your problem is cause I just fixed the same problem a couple of days ago.

I just fixed a problem similar to this a couple days ago. The power wire to the ballast resistor was grounding out in the fire wall. The Jeep would shut off almost instantly when I let go the key but, if I held the key on it would stay running.
