I went through this last year on my 98. Reman engine and everything new in the cooling system. All metal 3 row radiator. It would idle forever in 100 degree heat with no problem, but put under load on a hot day would overheat on the temp gauge. Replaced everything except the radiator. Even twice...
Another possible explanation would be a cracked spacer plate. Mine started rattling like crazy and when I pulled up to a buddy's place he ask if I had a diesel. The noise would go away under load, but return at idle. Because I'm too old to do this s**t myself anymore I had a transmission place...
Mine seems to stay a hair under, at, or a hair over the 210 mark...depending on the ambient temp.
After I replaced the all metal 3 core with the OEM, as a test, I put my foot into it and did a 1800ft elevation gain in 6.5 miles on a 100 degree afternoon. The temp needle got to right before the...
Hows the temp with the new shroud?
Re transmission making vehicle run hotter, there is some exchange of heat/cool in towing package radiator, but it's not really a transmission cooler. Some people bypass it without problems.

Pretty sure the 180 thermostat only keeps it from warming up as fast, which might increase wear as lubricants (unless high flow synthetics) and engine parts reach operating temperature. It does nothing to keep it cooler once it reaches operating temperature. At operating temperature (fully open)...
Yeah, demonioed is right about everything needing to be in place. 25 years of XJs and yearly desert trips. I only overheated after I got a 3 row copper/brass all metal replacement. As soon as I went back to OEM 2 row aluminum with plastic tanks, everything worked right.
I thought post 91s with the open cooling system were "self-burping." I've had 4 XJs since 1989 and the only one I had to "burp" was the closed system 89. Only cooling system issue I've had (other than a blown head gasket and two water pumps) was a spiffy 3 row copper/brass all metal radiator I...
The shroud could be the problem, but it might be the radiator. Did you ever overheat before the cooling system replace 2 years ago? If not, what radiator did you put in...after market or OEM?
My mechanic said Chrysler doesn't have a special TC fluid, but I guess they could. I've had 4 XJs all with 242s. None have been noisy in FT until the the 2 rebuilds and they were all changed many times with ATF. Even the one that Tera Flex made the 4:1 Tera-Low for in 2002/2003 was quiet in FT...
The only thing Chrysler recommends (and ties to warranty) is their ATF. They do not recommend anything else. The fluid was probably dark because it was the original. Many folks don't do upkeep on anything other than antifreeze and engine oil and that often goes by the wayside. I can remember a...
Don't have any idea. If the button fell out see which ends of the spring fits in it and experiment. Since the factory service manual doesn't show any schematic of how the handle itself is put together it probably isn't serviceable. You may just have to go to a "pick and pull" and pick up an old one.
Hydrolocked mine in July 06. As soon as it went under and died I did not attempt cranking it. Winched it out, pulled plugs and cranked out the water (lots of water). Dried out distributor cap, air box and left it sitting in the sun hood open for a couple hours. Put in an old spare air cleaner...
I have a 98 with AW4 (automatic). My handle just pulls off with straight up pressure. There's a nylon piece that goes inside the shift lever shaft (looks like a 2 inch cylinder with half a dozen pop beads attached to it). Don't see a spring.
If you're talking about the cup inside of the "T"...
Nope, spent a week and a half off and on crawling in the desert end of March. Whined the whole time when I was in anything other than 2WD (as it has since I got the reman). Last Friday I picked up a load of shale in my trailer. I told the guy in the loader to put it over the trailer axil and got...
