I went up this weekend and tried to "fix" this problem for Robert and his parents. No dice. Apparently, Dodge changed the shift patterns on their TC's between gen 1 and gen 2 Dakotas, and the 231J doesn't play happy with the Dakota shift linkage (or at least what the mechanic...

I did the same swap in my 87 MJ......there's a cover plate on the trans tunnel inside the cab, different covers for different transmissions. Here's a pic, the AX5 one is on the left, the AX15 on right:

little trick a buddy taught me....use a pair of needle-nose vise grips. Get the tips under the spring and push it back, then lock them on the cable. Then you can slip the barrel-end out of the notch in the lever.
I hate drum brakes....
