I had the same symptoms on my 89, and it turned out to be the EGR valve.

Great idea! I'm also thinking that your idea of taking a old brake light switch and using epoxy to hold the pin in place would work. Or, we could cut the top off, remove the spring and force a small bolt or screw through the top to hold the pin in place, then screw the switch in. It should work...

Update on my '89 xj; I changed out the proportioning valve, bled the system again, and I still have almost zero brakes. This is the first I've heard of this tool for centering the valve, so thank you for the info.

Sorry, it's a fusible link. There may be more than one, located on the passenger side. The positive battery cable has a smaller cable that goes to a small junction box. The fusible link is a thick wire casing with a much smaller gaged wire inside. It suns from that box to the relay box. Look for...

Sounds like a ground issue. Refresh or replace ground cable, cable on drivers side firewall, and ground wires at base of the oil dipstick. Also check the ground wire under the dash on the drivers side near emergency brake pedal.

If the car ran smooth in park but began vibrating badly when you put it in gear, then this can't be the rear driveshaft. Check the tailpipe. I'm wondering if a hanger past the trans cross member is off or broke and it's rubbing on the cross member.
