High pitched noise under the hood

Check the idler pulley bearings. I had one that dried up on me and made a loud high pitch whine at idle. If you have a mechanic's stethoscope it'll help you pinpoint the noise.

    Aftermaket Pistons?

Why bother with making a 4.0 high compression? Your gains will be minimal unless you invest in many other parts and pieces. With 10:1 pump gas will be out of the question for you unless you live on top of a mountain somewhere. If your going to tear down the bottom end, why not build a stroker...

    Cam Failures

Interesting, I initially thought I had gotten a set of bad lifters and replaced them hoping the noise would go away. Nope. It was still there and I began suspecting spring pressure. Did you have the springs installed at 1.8"? I had my seats cut to comp's spec of 1.8" (110lbs). I also had some...

    Cam Failures

Oil and ZDDP is definitely a big issue. I think another overlooked aspect of these cam failures is the pressure that the springs are actually installed at. In my experience this motor does not need much more than stock spring pressures to run with Comp or other aftermarket cams. Upon installing...

Fuel Economy & Power - The great balancing act...

Have you changes tire sizes, added a lift, or added any type of roof rack during the period when you noticed your gas mileage drop?

    Purolator pure one

I used Purolator pure one filters in the past and they seemed to be restrictive. I lost 10-20psi overall. I changed to WIX after reading decent test results etc.. Here's some good reading info for y'all. http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

    Engine Misfire, Plug Wires?

You should start by checking compression in all cylinders to help rule out mechanical problems. If the spark is good, trace all vaccum lines and inspect for leaks, is the cap and rotor in good shape? Are you getting a "check engine" light in the dash? Another good bet could be the injectors...

    Valve Springs

I used the Comp recommended 926 springs with the 68-232-4 cam 460in 476ex lift. The springs were installed at the recommended 1.8". I ended up with alot of valvetrain noise. It was ticking at idle and got progressively louder as the rpms increased and was clearly audible inside cab while...

    rough idle after compression test

Did you happen to the wires out of order on the distrbutor? Also check for any vacuum lines that may have gotten bumped loose.

    gear question

What axle? I would assume you're talking about pinion preload shims?

engine is slugish after tune up

Make sure the plug wires are routed correctly, check all of the vaccuum lines especially the one to the MAP sensor. Check your fuel pressure. Did they pull the distributor out for some reason? If so It may be indexed incorrectly. Just keep narrowing variables until you find the problem. It's...

getting better MPG and HP after lift

The only 3.90's I've ever seen for XJ were for the 8.25. 3.73's and 4.10's are everywhere though.

    1.7 roller rockers

Check your lifter preload first. It may have been altered due to differences in the roller setup from stock rockers. Are you running them on a stock cam?

need cam thrust pin and spring

There should be plenty of scrapped XJ's at the junkyard.

    hp44 pattern check

Looks close, but pinion may be a tiny bit deep? It'd be nice to have a few more pics on different areas of the ring gear to know for sure. Good luck.

new head on a old block (4.0)

I was actually thinking backwards! Oops. The HO head will bolt on to the renix block. HO heads have raised intake ports so you'll have to use a 91+ intake manifold. Dunno about the rest.

    Stroker kit for 95 XJ

Try swapping gears out before building a new motor! It'll help alot! And cost less $$$. Then build the motor later.

new head on a old block (4.0)

I'm running a 88' block and HO head in my 93. I didn't encounter any issues at all during the swap.

I need help finding / fixing a leak in my '98 XJ

The way that worked the best for me in finding leaks is to take a household/cleaner spray bottle filled w/water and set the nozzle on straight stream. Have somebody liberally squirt suspected areas while you look for water coming into the interior. Some areas I had issues with were the blower...

    Everythings leaking?

I've had much better luck with keeping diff covers sealed up using RTV and no gasket. Also when you replaced the pinion seal did you tighten the pinion nut to proper spec/preload?
