The hardware that attaches that bracket to the body is small diameter stuff. I'm sure you could use that area as a mounting point but I'd use different hardware approach.
I'm at around 5-5.5 inches. I used a 14 Inch travel 5125. With shorter or taller hoops it would give you different options. To save space I would do something like RoyalXJ did to avoid taking up cargo space with a cross brace.

Some pictures from VOR 2016, all the trails run are classified as legal byways in Vermont....and the terrain varies greatly, rocks mud and lots of trail riding.
I've gone the last two years. Awesome event..The way the maps are set up for the trails is amazing. Really a unique experience. Ive also already signed up for this year's.
I just did 2x6 rocker replacement. I used 2x2 1/8 angle iron to achieve the same idea. The angle iron was very inexpensive and was able to get it locally.
