Expedition XJ Build, Tech & Sources Thread

Inverter Wiring & Clean Ride! Hi, yes it is wired direct with a auto-resetting circuit breaker (don't want blown fuses out in the boonies) and it's parked on the floor, passenger side about the base of the B pillar - there is nothing there anyway and it makes really easy access to run a cord...

Expedition XJ Build, Tech & Sources Thread

What You Did With The Right Rear Cubby Space Hey XJ Expedition Type Peoples! Sorry I've been so busy I have not posted up in a while. Well what have you done with your right rear "cubby hole space"? I have seen a custom made speaker box and some other nice ideas. I wanted to share mine as...

Expedition XJ Build, Tech & Sources Thread

Glad you like! Yes I am also a big fan of TT diffs on ice, they have saved me from sliding off the road by my own hand (foot).

    2 alternators to 1?

Now there is something I didn't know - sweet! How much better is it? Is there any year/model restriction on this or any 4.0? Thx.

Rear bumper or just a hitch?

Not Cheap But Good Well FWIW, I really like my JCR rear bumper that has the hitch built in; it brings your rear approach angle up quite a bit, and is rated for what the XJ can tow. Only "con" is that JCR is not so cheap - it IS worth the money though. LOL my rig was so clean right there...

    Engine oil cooler?

Thank you my XJ Brethren for your replies! Yes I appreciate this reminder, I knew about the water moisture part - it's why you don't start a rarely driven car for 30 minutes and shut it down; You DRIVE it! The acids part - yeesh, more potential bad news and appreciate that. The temp point is...

Am i asking too much of my 4.0? lack of power

Re: Mill head, port clean up This was a question I have been wondering about as well - for those who have built a few of the 4.0 I6's - how much can you mill a (stock) head and be good to go with no higher than 91 octane? How about some light port work? I only run 91 anyway - I would not mind...

    Exhaust brand question

Also run the Borla cat-back and have a Magnaflow performance "direct-fit" Cat - I agree here as well - it improved power on my steep grades and sounds good. Everyone will hear it, but it is not obnoxious. I run the BDS 4.5" lift and had to saw off the offset outlet to prevent any interference...

    Engine oil cooler?

Re: Engine oil cooler? Passive? Hey just browsing around while looking into other cooling options before this year's first trip, and I found this item - has anyone tried one? Passive Oil Filter Cooler - If you tried one: Seem to work? http://www.ebay.com/itm/190968460364 Clearly you would...

Need help with installing my 8.25 gears

Math aside, I would suggest marking compound - without it you may still have the wrong bite.

    Driveshaft vibration

I absolutely DIG Tom Woods work on driveshafts.... That being said I Have noticed his balances leave something to be desired, and the lower gears you run the more important this becomes. I have 4.56's on 33's and at highway speeds the shafts are Ripping! A little off balance makes quite a...

PHENOMENAL COSMIC FAN, for an Itty Bitty Living Space? Also...

PHENOMENAL COSMIC FAN <-- Yes - Now oil cooling? Hello again, I'm digging this thread back up because I'm tinkering with things again and wanted to both ask a couple questions and share some results. First off, I did put one of those Napa ZJ HD fan clutches in - yes it's noisy but I could...

    Clutch fan upgrade

Nice Upgrade! NAPA part 272310 Hey that NAPA part 272310 is a nice upgrade! With AAA discount it was $41 and change out the door. YES, it does make more fan noise because it is putting the fan to work, but I could care less because of the improvement - It moved my temp needle from riding on...

    ripoff artists

Team Cherokee <-- Stay Away From! Sorry to hear about his man. Thanks for the heads up. Team Cherokee gave me a HORRIFIC run around. I bought a "premium oem" header panel and front fender, shipped direct to my body shop. We unboxed them, held them up to the XJ and they were Horribly made...

    Clutch fan upgrade

Looking For More Airflow Alright I am looking for a more airflow on my '91 4.0 w/AW4 as well, and it appears that this Napa 272310 is a bolt in upgrade. I currently have a stock replacement, a Hayden 2625, which does lock up, but not until everything is already pretty hot. Stock is likely...

Where to buy good quality tire chains?

Tire Chains for Thick Iced 17% Grades! Hello NW XJ brethren, I'm digging up this old thread because yesterday, it became damn relevant again! I work up the mountains in NorCal and have to climb a 17% winding, off cambered grade to get there. It was covered in 4 inches of ice yesterday, and...

They carefully slip down into the window weatherstripping, and once pressed all the way in, you tighten the hardware and they cannot recede or pop up and out of the gasket. I added a secondary piece of aluminum to tie mine together and they have not fallen out over some pretty harsh terrain...

    Looking for advice on Regearing

Good info thanks! Hey I wondered about the 8.25" being overly sensitive. I had a brand new set of 4.56 go south on the drive home - even stopped at 15 minutes and waited 4 hours for it to cool completely before finishing the drive home. Ended up stopping a dozen times with the next set and...
