Thanks for the reply Mike. I'm going to do a few things suggested and report back. Basically the thing was running fine for quite a long time as I'd done all the things you guys recommended! (Back when first bought.)
89 XJ 2DR 4.0 5sp. 2WD Sport...Engine stumbles above 2K RPM OR shakes at idle. I've checked grounds and connections and verified sensor's readings and operations. Has about 130K miles on it but can't find the problem!
I found a leak that had driven everyone nuts for years. The seam for the cowl area leaked on the fuse block. There is a layer of insulating stuff that kinda hides the seam way up above the fuse block area you may need to remove to see it. Water dripping on the fuse block made connections corrode...
I got a new tank and sender/pump made by Spectra. Best price was Amazon, 1st tank was dented so returned for exchange. (They are not boxed with any extra protection.) Hunting down new tank top vents, filler hose, grommets and whatever for total overhaul ratcheted up costs and time.
I'm by Tampa Bay so have been miserable with feels like temps around 100. My 50's Jeeps all had well placed large vents that caught bunches of air, the Cherokee's give you no venting really. Modern cars all block any way of venting so even on nice days it still gets hot inside.
I pulled up to...
Thanks, You see why I'll be running R12 still. On line I was reading that expansion vale calibration could be a factor. I'll compare closely with both before installing the new one.
The new condenser came in and it is a parallel flow. I won't know for certain it fits proper but the new lines match up and it looks correct near as I can tell. (48.00 off of eBay.)
FYI I found info that states R134 will indeed destroy the container screen inside an old R12 dryer using XH-5 desiccant. A dryer using XH-9 is safe for both R12 and R134. (The mindset being rearward/forward compatible for new parts.)
I found the best pricing for a NEW compressor on RockAuto...
Took a while but I should have all the parts to replace everything except the evap. by Friday. Thanks for the advise, seems "Synthetic PAG" works for both R12 and R134 so I'll use it so a change in the future will not be difficult. I've ordered a new condenser that might be parallel from looking...
OEM has been real hard to find for my 89. The stuff is just gone and NLA everywhere I look. I've a bunch of Standard parts used that are okay but I buy the top grade not economy.
I just ordered a new CPS for my 89 XJ finding one on eBay for 25.00 shipped. It's Omix-Ada brand and has a 5 year warranty. Other Omix-Ada parts have been nice quality so I figured I'd see how it does.
With most factory parts NLA/discontinued I'm trying to figure out the best aftermarket...
Thanks Mike. I'm a go for R12 so I would change the dryer if changing to R134 later. I just finished installing and charged an R134 system in my 70 Charger yesterday. I bought a vacuum pump and R12/R134 gauge set to service both types of systems.
Looking around ESTER oil is compatible with both R12 and R134 and unlike PAG it isn't nasty stuff to work with. I've got 6 12/14oz cans of R12, new expansion valve, 3 new hoses so sorting out condenser and compressor would just leave cleaning the evaporator well to have a system charged with R12...
