    A/C compressor damage

My 89 4.0l A/C compressor seized up after making some rattling noises along the way. All was fine until I didn't drive it for a few weeks, then the noise came and about 30 minutes of run time later it froze. Certain systems, like late model Fords IIRC, require all sorts of flushing and even a...

likelyhood of a bent front axle

For the first couple hundred k miles I wasn't the owner of my 89 4.0 4wd XJ, however it appears to have been taken care of OK. 4wd works great as does most everything else. However, as I've talked about before, it wears front tires on the extreme inside. What's the probablility that it's just a...

please critique this estimate from a local 4x4 shop

Interesting thread. I'll use the estimate to impress the wife of my worth... ;) Seriously though, having been in the biz, and having had family in the biz, I thought I'd throw out some thoughts on honesty. There are definite cases at the endpoints, but the middle is fuzzy. So, consider the...

    2001 Cooling fan Issue

I looked at the wiring diagram fer ya and it does indeed have a separate output to control the rad fan vs the clutch. I used to have a 2000, and IIRC, the AC was anemic. You can drive a relay from the clutch line (the output of the clutch relay) and put this new relay output in parallel with...

    Deteriorated tube, dealer only part?

Any hose/pipe rigging will do, but the part nums listed seem to be: 5300 4379 for a 1987 5300 4838 for a 1988-90 5300 4378 for a 1987 (not sure of the diff) assuming it's a 4.0, which it looks like...

    camber off

I checked that, although it was with a tape measure held tight to the same tread position front and back axle high and it was good. What amount of toe being off starts to show up as camber? I may not be accurate to .001", but probably less than 1/8".

    bump stops

While checking the suspension I find that my front bump-stops are eaten away and look like they've been disintegrating. They are very thin now, but look like they were maybe 6" long and red when new. They really didn't hold up... It's an 89 4wd, stock but with 1 size over tires. What kind/brand...

    camber off

On my 89xj 4wd I'm finding that the front tires are wearing bald on the extreme inside edge before the rest of the tire. I didn't trust the first set that came with the car, but the next ones are doing it too. From what I've read, camber isn't adjustable, and everything is big steel that's just...

odd tire wear all of a sudden

The shocks are nice and stiff on the bumper test. I did check for out of round and wobble on the front ones (current front ones) and there is none. No off-roading on these so far (been too busy) and no women drivers. It's also affected the past front two which are now on the back, and the...

odd tire wear all of a sudden

235/75R15, which is the same as a '92 2wd that does fine. I try to run 32psi cold. That's what I always have run. The old front tires, now on the back, I'm running at 36psi to run more on the center of tread rather than evenly, to avoid the cupping it got while up front. It runs a little...

odd tire wear all of a sudden

The last set of tires wore fine. I get a new set. It's wearing fine. The shocks are very old, so I buy the gas filled Monroes for it [truck/suv (black color)]. The old shocks were dead. The ride improves and it holds the road now. 15,000 miles later, the tires start to bounce (front). I get...

    engine oil and trim Q

Thanks. I estimate about 2 qts+ drained from filter and pan. Still runs great after refilling. Most of that was probably circulating when it sucked a bit o' air. -Skip

    engine oil and trim Q

2 questions for all... A friend and I were driving in his 92 xj (stock 2wd, 4.0l) and we noticed that he was running warm (normally around 160 with a 160 stat, but about 190 now, A/C on). As he got home, the oil gauge started to wiggle about, and dropped to 10 or less for an instant a few...

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

The easiest to get at and try is the one to the power brake booster. HOWEVER, it will give you the ability to let in a lot of air, or just a little, and it's disconnecting has nothing to do with the engine other than causing a vacuum leak - no sensors on teh other end. Just put your thumb over...

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

I forgot to suggest a few other things. Again, it was late... ;) When it's running bad, can you use the throttle and raise the rpm to some point and get it to run smooth? Will just 400 or 500 rpm do it? None at all? Disconnect a small vacuum line (not to a sensor) and how does it change? Put...

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

OK, it was late.... the list should be related to engine operation stuff... and the disconnect should not change things (much) if you hit the bad part, but reconnecting it should make it better if you can do this during the bad running times. Just as if you only turned the bad part off and on again.

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

The thing that tells the ECM to go into closed loop is an O2 sensor voltage starting to swing. That gives it something to work with and adjust timing and mixture. If it's doing this cold, and if the sensor is new, it's probably not that then, although try disconnecting it when running fine and...

    Prolong Transmission Treatment???

Many years ago I was a partner in a garage. We had several tranmission jobs at one time so we decided to do a test of these 'treatments'. This is how I've come to use TransX. First we took an old seal and a new seal and put it in a couple of different products. One looked like it inflated the...

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

The ECM is on the fender just behind the left front headlight. On the Renix and most others, the temp info if for fine tuning mixture. Some may have algorithms that will drop it into open loop mode below a certain temp, but I've seen it almost cold and still closed loop, so not sure who does it...

    Intermittent rough run, any clues?

It's not a part of cold operation because a normally functioning one doesn't out[ut anything when cold. As soon as it starts outputing, it goes closed loop. If it is outputing cold, it will be inherently inaccurate, yet be used. Passing the smog test when it was running right just means the...
