I personally would build the 94. OBD I, No airbags, low pinion dana 30. 91-95 High Output 4.0s are my favorite, 1/2 inch head bolts vs. 7/16ths.
Its hard to kill a properly maintained 4.0 I have had a 91, then a 95, and now back to a 93. My current one has 201k on it....Still beat the crap out...
Does it make the noise at very slow speeds as well? Say less than 5mph?
If so my vote would go towards a wheel bearing. Mine currently are toast. They can make some god awful sound.
Jack up the front end and grab the tire at 3 and 9, and see if you can notice any movement in the hub. Do the...
Doh! 4.0 are 242 cubic inch motors arent they.....any way total brain fart. ATF fluid is cheap enough. I change mine out at least once a year or every 20,000 miles. I only use np231 cases. But again I have never heard of a 242 failing if it was maintained.
Inspect the chain and gears for abnormal wear. Other than that I have never heard of a timing chain failure on a 4.0. I have heard of oil pumps failing before timing chains. I have 201k on my 93 and it has not had a timing chain yet.
Rule of thumb...if your worried about it replace it...
Yeah I couldn't believe it was only tire balance on my Jeep till I put it on a balancer. My jeep would literally hop down the road. HeyHar did a good job of answering your question for me.
I am not saying for sure it is a Tire balance issue. But, I always start with the simplest and cheapest...
Try a different radiator cap. Its unlikely that this is the fix. But if it where, it would be the simplest and cheapest. Just because you have a new radiator cap doesn't mean you didn't get a bad one. I am king of getting faulty parts. I blew two napa cv axles within 50 miles. Manufacturing defect.
I have never had a properly maintained 4.0 not start. I used to live in MN. All mine where high out 4.0s from 91-95. Keep a good battery, upgrade cables, good starter, stay on top of your ignition and you will never have a problem. I ran 10-40 dino oil year round. I have had 4.0s start in -35...
Harmonic Balancer....always inspect while your changing a belt. That is good advice.
As for belts. I went through belts on my Jeeps and my explorer. I have found that Napa, Autozone, Carquest belts all suck. Goodyear belts or Dayco makes a special belt for squeling...those Napa belts are the...
4.88s on 35's...Yeah not if you drive a 100 miles a day. I have a 5.5 inch rubicon express lift with some serious fender cutting to clear 37s with minor trail rubbing. I currently have 35s on with 4.88s. I have the ax-15....70mph = 2800 rpm.....see yah fuel economy.
To get decent fuel economy...
Just out of curiosity what size tire and gear ratio are you running? Auto or stick?
I run 35 inch goodyear mtrs....love em except they get a little scary in snow/ice. I like the mtrs they were one of the lighter mud terrians. Pay attention to tire weight...especially if running stock gears. I...
My death wobble would only hit at certain speeds. Sometimes it would only occur after a bump in the road. It was my tires being out of balance. It doesn't hurt to check.
Hi, Its my first post on NAXJA. I typically hover around on MN-Jeep.com.
I am new to the forum but not new to Jeeps. Aren't you all assuming worst case scenario? I read the thread. Not one person suggested that he have is front two tires put on a wheel balancer. You may have lost a wheel weight...
