$65 for factory service on the 7100. Depending on what oil you select oil and seal kit can put you in the $40-45 range so you can save a bit. Makes more sense if you are going to do more than one shock or you want to play with the valving.
That spring effects the rebound of the bumpstop not compression. Keeps the bump from rebounding too fast. The bump needs to slow the axle into the chassis but shouldnt push it away.
Exactly correct. Wrong valving = bad ride. The manufacturers that take the time to valve each application generally have the best ride... those that throw generic one size fits all stuff onto the market generally dont ride so hot. Valving can be done correctly with just about any shock...
Thanks for the kind words, I really liked the in spring prothane jounce bumps that Cal at team NAXJA ran. Simple and cheap. Thinking this is the easiest/ cheapest setup to use up front.
As far as foam jounce filled bumpstops I made a few sets and want to see results from the field. Pricing...
Heavy articulation can produce bushing bind near full compression with parallel mounts. Recommend perpendicular or change lower rod end to heim style from the 7100.
There are plenty of valvings available that arent on the standard list. #5 is 255/70 so bumping up the compression and leaving the rebound alone would be 255/100 or so. With the heavy armor/ winch, etc you will still have a lowered rideheight though since thats a function of the spring.
Since you are changing the mounts you will need to measure the colapsed and extended lengths and order the shock by length. Bilstein 5160 has application specific valving that should work if the lengths are still right, other wise look at the 5165. 255/70 valving is good for all around usage but...
Because Bilstein supplies shocks to OE manufacturers the bushings and materials used are specifically made to keep NVH to a minimum and last for many years as opposed to generic aftermarket shocks with cheap (and hard) urethane bushings.
I have done a number of upgrades for the new 5160/5165...

There isnt a crossover Fox valving lists the shims and the Bilstein lists the actual damping numbers. For XJ fronts with heavy accessories up front Bilstein 255/100 is a good place to start.
