I don't know how much my Xj weighed. It had no back seat. No big rear bumper. But it had a huge piece of 1/4 under the gas tank when I moved it up (basically same length and width of tank). And 3/16 plating on all 3 sides of unibody Here's a pic. They worked great for me.

I say get it and Learn to weld. My suggestion is to at least get the harbor freight one that can take argon/ C02 gas. It makes way better welds. Way less frag to clean up and easier to learn on. You can just start with flux core - and not buy the tank upfront. I started with one of those and now...
