Well, the biggest difference would be the shaft running from the steering column to the r&p. The hydro setup would have to have a valve system to translate the left/right steering from the column to the ram. R&P is cross-member mounted, designed for IFS, jointed to follow the movement of the...

It never ceases to amaze me... anyways. New Merce-Jeep coming soon? I've found one, but don't own it yet, still scratching my head on a few things, I'll post when I know though!

Has anyone ever swapped any type of diesel engine into a XJ?

Aw MAN! I have always wanted a 4.3 diesel! The 4.3 gasser is my favorite GM motor, and if I could find a diesel 4.3..... what year's were they avail and in what models? Any spec #'s?

Has anyone ever swapped any type of diesel engine into a XJ?

Edit: oh yeah, and i forgot to mention that awesome turbo whine that made everyone's neck hurt when I drove by -=eg=-

Has anyone ever swapped any type of diesel engine into a XJ?

Ok, I made this big reply to this thread, but by the time I had it finished, the board had logged me out and in anger I closed the window without copying my reply to paste. Verylongstoryshort: Yes, I put a mercedes 3.0l 5-cyl turbodiesel engine in my 88MJ. it was 2x4, still looking for...

I have every intentions of doing something to advertise the transplant. I'm just not sure what yet. If I can find "diesel" or "turbodiesel" that matches very closely to the comanche badges, I'll do that. Freightliner has mercedes powered vans that bear badges reading "powered by mercedes"...

    XJ to MJ seat conversion

It may differ between years/model/option. I do know that mine were a pain in the butt, and I'm really glad I have access to a shop full of welding supplies and equip. On another note, however, I have noticed that the passenger seat does not set level. Whether it be due to design, or error...

    XJ to MJ seat conversion

Ok, scored a set of buckets out of a wrecked xj at the bone yard. For $40 for the pair, it was too good to pass up, especially because not only were they the exact ones I was looking for, but they were the right color and everything. Adventure #1 Removing the brackets from the MJ Bench. OMG...

That is exactly right, and was actually one of the considerations when deciding to go with the rack. As a matter of a fact, on my first test run, I had set the toe in ever so slightly, thinking that like everything else, the tires would naturally try to toe-out while being pushed down the road...

Thanks! Floor, firewall, and stock tranny crossmember were all very accepting of the motor and tranny. Crossmember was a inch too far forward to set the mercedes mount center, but I handled that with a piece of 3/4 square tubing to the rear lip, and I'm happy. As for the shifter, well, I'll...

Ok, I'll try to sum it up in the nicest way possible. My version of bumpsteer, is when the steering wheel is taken from you either from a bump, dip, etc. The feeling I get out of the steering isn't what I would consider bumpsteer, nor is it a setup I would suggest anyone else try on their rig...

Believe it or not, tho the general consensus agrees with you.... The bump steer is un-noticeable. Quite frankly, I think it's less. The steering is a bit .... different ... but nice and tight otherwise.

    Rack and Pinion?

Just for the record....... The 80's ford mustang r&p is working wonders. Welded a custom cross-member to mount it on, heated and bent the stabilizer. Tie rod ends FIT. Total investment: $60 for reman'd r&p 5 hours welding and shaping c'member 5 years off my life for setting toe-in and...

Running the merc tranny. I like it so far, just need to build a shifter console for the mercedes shifter, but I need bucket seats for that. Yeah, cursing and beer. It took several months worth of cursing and beer!

I'm trying real hard not to say the word "disappointed". oops. too late. I really did expect something in the 27mpg range. The 300SD sedan the motor and tranny came out of weighs in a half ton more than the MJ. I figured minus 1k lbs, plus 0 aerodynamics, times the tailgate... I'm not sure...

80's model ford mustang r&p. Actually it's doing REAL nice. It makes for a weird ride in the rough stuff, but then again the 3" lift springs are way too stiff. On the highway, though, it rocks.

So far, I've been clocking 21mpg average, but that is with 31's, a 4.10 rear, and excessive speeding on the highway. With a new rear end, smaller tires (dare I say that) and some normal driving, I'm hoping 25 or better.

    Rack and Pinion?

Wow, just went to pirate4x4 and looked at Station's rig. I'm really impressed. However, in my situation, anything even close to that would be an amazing case of overkill. Not only that, but I finally realized that I am NOT going to be able to mount the steering, hydro or r&p, to the axle...

    Rack and Pinion?

Ok, I see what you are talking about now. It took me a minute to get all the geometry right in my head.
