Which fuses should I look at 1st.....I checked them all a few months back but I guess I could have missed one.
Does anyone have a fuse map that shows what powers what?
Thanks,
Eric
98 XJ 4.0 auto
One day it just didnt start.....will crank over fine but not start.
Changed the CPS (twice) The ECM (with junkyard unit) The relays The distributer pick up coil The battery.
no changes.
It doesnt get power to the coil or fuel to the rail unless I shortcut the...
For sure it is one piece with a plug that goes into the side pos + neg . no bolts in the thing besides the ones I removed to get it off the block/bracket.
If it is in the computer then I have allready changed that out.
This thing has me stumped!
thanks
eric
I dont see an ICM or anything on the bottum of the coil.
It was an early 98 production so maybe the 97 specs would be correct.
I pulled the coil totally out....bracket and all. I can gaurantee there is nothing under it but the engine block. So where would this ICM be located?...distributer...
Not a relay issue at all....I have changed them all 2 times now.
There is no module under the coil. only a bracket and then the block.
Does anyone know how I can test the coil?
Thanks,
Eric
I have my XJ stored at a buddys place & during the winter he would go out and start it every now & then to make sure everything was good & charged etc.
One day he went out & it would crank & crank but not start.
Through a process of elimination I have replaced the CPS...the computer...the...
I have regained power at 2 spots on all relays and I get power to the 2 small fuses that control the fuel pump & coil power for a second or 2 anyway.
OK I put in a different computer & now I have power to the fuel pump...it primes when I turn the key. I also get power to the coil for a split...
The fuses that are out are the row closest to the relays but not the one that is closest to the fender.
What can I do to resolve this other than splicing a wire into the bad fuses from a different one that does have power.....only to test the problem.
What do you think?
Eric
The 2 fuses that have no power on either side are in the cluster if tiny fuses under the hood directly before the relays.
I was thinking that they were blanks but it doesnt make sense that they have wires running to them from the bottum etc.
The lid of the box doesnt tell me what they do...
I changed out the CPS and the ASD relay today and it still will not start.
What to check next?
PCM ?
Thanks for all the responses. I need all the info I can get.
Eric
Not sure if I mentioned that I put a few gallons in the tank just to be sure it had fuel in the 1st place.
I did try the unplug the CPS trick but it didnt start.
Who has CPS for cheap maybe I will change it out just to see?
Thanks,
Eric
I went out to start my 1998 XJ 4.0 today and it will crank fine but not start.
So I began the testing and determined there was no fuel coming to the rail.
So I unplugged the fuel pump and tested a few wires & no power back there. I double checked by running 2 wires to the pump and it will pump...

I slammed it on Ebay to get the pictures out there for everyone. The item number of the auction is 7949045309

$400! Thats cheap.
Sounds like more than I am cut out for though. I thought you might say it needed carbs or fork seals or something easy like that.
I have never been able to make anything run that I bought not running yet,
motorcycle wise that is.
Thanks anyway, Eric
$1100 + shipping, at least that matches the local offer.
I have a bike in mind but I guess it depends how many pieces the klr650 is in.
What things need repair on the bike and how much of the price would the 650 account for? Maybe some pictures are available so I can see the bike?
