Holy crap this thread still lives! When I started it 3 years ago I never imagined it would get to 13 pages and have over 180 posts! It's become quite the boneyard shopping list. Don't know if this has been mentioned but a lot of ZJ's and WJ's came with a nice stacked plate tranny cooler. I've...
I swapped a my 231 for a 242 in my '00 XJ and the old linkage worked just fine. The old shift gate lets me go through all the ranges on the 242 without problems. The driveshaft is the same length.
Hi all,
Does anybody know what the difference is between the 88-98 and the 99+ 4.0 starter is? My starter went in my 2k XJ and the ones listed for 99+ are significantly more expensive than the ones listed for 88-98. I thought any year 4.0 starter would fit. WTF
thanks for any help
Sudden massive oil loss was what did it in. Probably the result of an accident it was in where some clueless lady ran a stop sign and plowed into the passenger side front wheel smacking the uca axle mounts into the oil pan disturbing the the seal. It went 60000 miles before the seal blew at 130k.
Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up making a deal for that '94 engine. I traded a couple of parts trucks and $125 for it. I just got it and I'm going out to take measurements to make sure the motor mounts will line up. I'm also going to check if the accessories and brackets will swap...
will a pre-2000 4.0 bottom end swap into a 2000 XJ?
I just rebuilt the top end of my 2000 XJ's 4.0 only to find that the bottom end is also hosed. I can't find a 2000 4.0 to swap in so I'm looking for options. Will a pre 2000 4.0 swap in if I use my 2000 head? Does the engine have to come from...
IMHO just go with a v8 ZJ tie rod They are a 1" dia. solid bar instead of a hollow tube and use a larger tre (the same one that connects the draglink to the pitman arm). They are at least as strong as aftermarket if not stronger and can be bought in any parts store.
Since this has little to do with his actual question I'll answer for him. I have a '94 w/a 242 and a 2000 w/a 231 and am swapping in a 242 from a ZJ into it. When the weather gets bad be it snow/ice or heavy rain I would rather be driving my '94 hands down.
If you live in the north east IMHO...
you usually dissconnect the lower arms and do it one side at a time to replace coils. It's going to be a real bitch getting your upper arms reconnected if you did both at the same time. I'm sure there are multiple other ways (come-a-long, ratchet strap, hydro ram, large pipe wrench on the...
The XJ is an AMC design not DCX. There are many benifits to uniframe (stiffness, saves weight, etc) The search function is your friend there has been a LOT of talk about this topic.
Make sure to bring your own jar of vaseline to the dealership if you go this route as an oem cat will cost a few hundred bucks. You can't beat $50 shipped for a Car Sound/Magnaflow from ebay + $8 for a peice of 2.25" exhaust pipe to make it "direct fit".
From what I understand RE and Rustys use the same spring supplier so they should be a toss up. I hear that OME is the best. Avoid Rough Country and Procomp from what I hear they are the worst riding. All that said I run a Rustys 3.5" full length AAL at the moment and see it as an improvement...
Yep the coil spacers will work with ZJ coils. It may be cheaper to go with the heavy duty coils carquest sells iirc they give about 2.5" lift by themselfs and only cost about $70. The ZJ coils + spacers might cost more.
If you want to clear 31's without fender trimming or adding excessively large bumpstops go with a 3" AAL kit (3" coil in front, 3" LONG AAL in rear) Rustys have has the best deal going for about $250 with shocks.
Thats sounds about rite (3.5”). Size your lift to what size tires you will run. Keep in mind that anything over 31's is not going to be bearable with stock gears for a dd, and even with 31's you'll notice significant power and fuel mileage losses, especially all loaded up for a long trip...
