    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

The final solution, was to replace the radiator and hoses, it was not to bad of a job. It is running like new and all is back to normal. I broke up the old radiator to look at the inside and it was totally clogged.

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

Yes it cooled back down. I am going to go to Napa and get one of those hoses with the spring, then put antifreeze and a bottle of super flush to leave in, and see if it starts running again at 195 or 200 like it has been doing four the past four years. Then I will see if any auto shops do a...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

I did not spin the fan while it was hot. But it does not spin freely so I thing the clutch is ok. It over heated when I was driving at highway speeds so I don't think it is that. So far I have narrowed it down to the radiator, or the old lower hose with no spring, plus maybe a bad head gasket...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

Today I flushed out the heater core and got all the brown water and muck out of it, I also flushed the radiator and put in water and super flush. It is not over heating but is running hot about 220-235, Most likely because I did not put any antifreeze which would of raised the boiling point. I...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

I am thinking the problem is the radiador now. TO CharlesS: No the oil has always stayed very clean, and stays clean even after like six months after an oil change. I think I am going to flush the radiator system because the fluid looks like thin chocolate milk. I hope that will buy me...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

Here is what I have done since. I pulled off the belt and pulled on the pulley wheel of the water pump, I tried to move it side to side, and forward and back. It had no play in it. It also is not making any bearing noise when I turn it nor have a heard any bearing noise in the past. I also don't...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

I took it out and it started to overheat again even with no thermostat. I got a replacement water pump I will install tonight. It was running a little warm on the way to the parts store, but did not overheat. On the way back it just shot up really fast the needle actually jumped. I hope it is...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

Ok I think to be safe I will change the water pump. I removed the thermostat and put it in boiling water, and it did not seem to want to open, but I was able to push it open with my hand, but it seemed a little gummed up. still not sure if it was bad or good. I put the housing back on without a...

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

I am going to take off the thermostat and drive it for a week or so, it's August and hot so I don't care. If it still overheats it must be my radiator or water pump I guess. I'll put the thermostat in boiling water and see if it opens after I remove it to check it out.

    1999 XJ overheated today! 4.0 185,000

The last time this happened was like 4 years ago, and I changed out my original radiator and I was fine. This time I was just sitting parked and all of a sudden the temp gauge went almost into the red. I started driving and got on the highway and it overheated while I was driving 65 mph. Here...

    tranny fluid debate

Dex III of course says right in my owners manual. My wife's 1999 4.0 is close to 200,000 miles and the trans shifts like the day we bought it over 12 years ago. She drives very well. I am embarrassed to say I only changed the trans fluid once a 75,000 at jiffy lube and once at 180,000 myself...

    1999 XJ brake fluid

Thank you for all the great information from both posters. I know what to do now. I am sticking with the dot 3 brake fluid, because it has worked fine for 12+ years so I am staying with it. Kind of like my 12+ year transmisson that has never given me a problem. I stick with the old type dino...

    1999 XJ brake fluid

I need to have my brake fluid flushed. I was wondering how much to buy, and should I only use OEM fluid from the dealer, I don't want to put in some cheap after market stuff and then have my master cylinder get ruined or something.

99 xj front pads wore out more on passenger side side

I changed my front brake pads and rotors today, and noticed the passenger side pads wore out more then the drivers side by a good amount. I also think I here a sound coming from that side. Could something be worn out. 186,000 miles and everything is still stock on the front brakes except the...

    Replacing front brakes and rotor's 1999 4.0

I am replacing my front brake pads and rotors, it's been so many years since I did it last I forgot which pads and rotors I used. I don't want ceramic, is Bendix the tried and true replacement pads? Is there a certain rotor brand that is better or are they pretty much all the same?

How to drain all the coolant?

Be careful sometimes you can end up spraying water under your hood in the process of flushing, like if a hose disconnects. I did that and degreased the spring mechanism attached to the throttle cable with out noticing, a few months later I got a stuck gas pedal, it was a 1 minute fix, I just...

Can I run these tires on my 99 stock XJ

Can I put on BFG All Terrain 30 x 9.50 R15 LT 1040 M+S on my 99 4.0 187,000. I just put on new rear HD leaf springs so I have the clearance. I just don't want to over stress the front end or stock steering box. It is just a daily driver that get driven mildly.
