well the fuel in the tank also helps keep the fuel pump cool maybe it overheated and shutdown and after it cooled it started working never heard of that but you never no your best bet is to replace the fuel filter the pump probably sucked up some crap when you ran it to low

probably a frozen ebrake cable did you check and make sure the ebrake works the brake light on your dash is for the ebrake i would check that they tend to get stuck and will cause the brakes to drag on the drums more then they should causing the heat problem
i dont think they came with 8.25 but not positive and they have coils not leafs so it will not bolt in it might be a dana 44 but they have an aluminum center section prone to breaking
