'98 XJ making strange engine noise

Whatever you do, stop buying parts from O'Reilly, AutoZone, Advance or any of the other throw away parts stores. I encourage you to buy dealership or name brand parts online to avoid these Chinese part failures, plus you might even avoid lead poisoning, especially if you don't touch your battery...

'98 XJ making strange engine noise

I'm definitely going to replace the h20 pump since 115+ degree temps are coming in July. But I'm hoping it is the harmonic balancer making the noise. The jeep has 170,000 on the clock so it wouldn't hurt to replace it too.

'98 XJ making strange engine noise

It wasn't the pump for sure. That was the 1st thing I checked. I've been doing more research, it is probably the HB. There is really no rubber patruding but it is dry and cracked, and I've noticed that the HB is wobbling around more than any other pulley. The jeep has lived here in AZ all of its...

'98 XJ making strange engine noise

I'm familiar with engines, but I haven't heard this sound from an engine. It's a squeeking sound like dry hollow metal on metal, not NOT A BELT SQUEAL. I replaced the whole cooling system and water pump a year ago and it started making the noise 3 days after that. At first I thought I over...

    P0301 and rough idle

I have a '98 xj classic and it was throwing a cylinder 1 misfire code daily and running rough. It literally sounded like it had a big cam in it. The jeep wouldn't start the other day so I cleaned the battery cables for the third time in a year. Now, it runs like a sewing machine. Im just...

    Many issues, please read?!?!

I have a 98 XJ with 156k on the clock, also has 33's and stock gears. I recently have had a problem with it not shifting into overdrive, it's currently shooting the following codes... P0705, tranny range sensor. P0740, Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid. P0700, Tranny Control System. My ? is...

Tranny won't shift into overdrive... TCM?

So the NSS helped the reverse light problem, but nothing else. I actually drove the Jeep for 20 miles with it in the "mystery gear' between 3rd and 4th and it ended up pushing tranny fluid thru the dipstick tube and onto the exhaust. (keep in mind I have the extra towing tranny cooler too)...

Tranny won't shift into overdrive... TCM?

It all turned out to be the Flux Capacitor. Duh... I should've known.

Tranny won't shift into overdrive... TCM?

NSS is bullsh!t. I got a new one from a friend at Chrysler. NOT THE PROBLEM! But thanks for leading me to believe that was the problem. It was an un-necessary pain in the ass. THX!!

Rear differential - do I have limited slip?

I live in Arizona and I ride all of the same nasty trails as most of my friends with Dana 44's. They've broke, I haven't. ..... yet..

Rear differential - do I have limited slip?

It will most likely be an 8.25" rear end, you can identify it by the flat bottom of the gear housing. Yes, there will be a sticker on the inside of the glove box cover warning you that it's LSD. Also, almost all XJ's that have a stock towing package and no ABS came with the 8.25'' limited slip...

    Airbag light stays on

So a new clockspring should fix the airbag light and make the cruise control work again??

Tranny won't shift into overdrive... TCM?

Tried the battery deal, but both tail lights flash only when I'm turning left with the brakes on. Freakin chryslers! Where the F is the NSS?

Tranny won't shift into overdrive... TCM?

I've searched all forums and found nothing. I have a '98 XJ Classic with 150,000mi and a 6in lift with 33's and stock .355 gears. The problem is that it sometimes won't shift into OD . It does shift into OD most of the time, but when it doesn't, the check engine light comes on. I went to...

CSF 3 Row Radiator the best way to go?

As long as you get the CSF aluminum radiator you'll be fine. I took someone's advice on here and bought the brass 2 row and my temps jumped up to 230* on the freeway w/ the ac off!! I just went back to a new stock replacement and it never goes over 215* with the ac on creeping along in 110-120...

Burping the radiator on a 98 cherokee??

I was just wondering if it was necessary to burp the radiator on the newer cooling systems. Mine is running hotter now that I have a brass 2 core radiator than it did with the stock one. I believe the main issue is the brass radiator, since brass doesn't dissapate heat as efficiently as...

CSF 3 Row Radiator the best way to go?

I bought the CSF 2 row brass radiator 4 months ago. Now I kick myself every day for not replacing my stock radiator for a stock replacement from Chrysler. It regularly runs up to 225-230*. The stock one lasted 135,000 miles with plastic tanks, I think that's a better bet than overheating. In my...

    Kinked transmission line

Quick disconnect my ass!!! My '98 does not have the little plastic pieces coming out of the fitting, so there's nothing to grab onto. It doesn't look like they're broken off either. Any suggestions other than cutting it and replacing it with a rubber hose & hose clamp?

I know, it's stupid... but I need suggestions.

I have a built 98 XJ with 132,000mi that is need of an engine cleaning. I know not to spray into the air ducts, electrical, and all that sh!t, but is there anything else that I need to be careful with while cleaning my engine with a high pressure car wash gun?? Sorry, I've never had to screw...
